Born on 30 January 1913, Amrita Sher-Gil was an Indian Painter. She has been called “one of the greatest avant-garde women artists of the early 20th century” and a pioneer in modern Indian art. Her painting style was influenced by academic realism and post-impressionist trends. She is the only woman who won a gold medal in Paris. Amrita is also considered one of the illustrious women artists of the 20th century and is famed as the ‘Frida Kahlo of India’.

Bharat Mata was painted by Tagore in 1905. It depicts a saffron-clad woman dressed in a saree like a Sadhvi, holding a book, sheaves of paddy, a piece of white cloth, and a rudraksha garland (mala) in her four hands. The painting illustrates a depiction of the Swadesh ideals during the larger Indian Independence Movement.
